As a (primarily) fantasy writer, I used to think that my writing had to come entirely out of my head. But in the last few years, I’ve started to steal. I keep my eyes open for anything interesting and put it in the back of my brain to stew.
I asked John Brandon (an author whose writing is crazy specific) how he could possibly remember all the tiny, spot-on things he puts in his stories, and he said, “Keep a detail journal. Always. Wherever you are.”
